Some 3 car F1 teams, but special guest drivers?
« on: October 29, 2014, 11:23:41 AM »
Each race a different name in one or 2 extra cars - good/bad???

Can't claim idea is mine, Mario Andretti has suggested it, but it would fill out grid and avoid championship points problems.

Andretti, the Italian-American who won the world title in 1978, told the Guardian: “Formula One should loosen up a bit. I think they’ve gone slightly overboard with the technical side of the engine. And we saw in Sochi [the previous race in Russia], teams backing off for fuel reasons, just to make it to the end.

“I would love to see a team invite a third car for a special event. For the US Grand Prix, say, Mercedes could invite a third car, having groomed some well-known American driver in testing, to take part as a guest competitor. Can you imagine what that would do for the promotion of the event? Every newspaper in the country would write about it.”

I know I'm not alone in my admiration for all things Mario.

But I don't think an unknown driver, no matter how 'American' they might be, would make news in the US media.

If they were to drop a top NASCAR driver into an F1 car, (or even she who we don't need to discuss), now THAT would be news.

I'd rather just see Mario out there.  I bet he could get a Mercedes into Q3 :)

That's true. Massive crashes always make the news.

:good: :good: - and ditto what Cos said.  Put Tony Stewart in it, that'll make news, especially if he kills someone.

3 car teams and guest drivers?I don't like
them....F1 doesn't need any more gimmicks.

Just go back to what all of us love F1....not find
ways to run us off.

Wait,Bernie strapped to the front spoiler is one gimmick I'd vote for

Just put Ralf Schumacher, Montoya, and Irvine on the grid in third cars.  They all thought they were so great, so now they can show us just how amazing they really are :D!  They'd certainly liven things up with a few collisions :D.

Oh, that would be priceless.  That should be a condition, so teams don't just bring in pay drivers every race.  Only allow drivers who have done at least a season in F1.   :good: :good: :good:
