We have lost another great from motorsport. Swedish rally champion Erik Carlsson has died. Carlsson was rallying in the 50's & 60's. He is most famous for his time piloting Saabs.
A case in point: He was driving a Saab 96 in the 1962 RAC Rally. Carlsson's car had broken a support arm on the rear axle. He thought it was game over until he spotted a 96 road car parked up with nobody in it. He jacked the car up, liberated the part and left a note under the windscreen wiper.
Such was the big man's ability to charm his way out of the situation, he and the couple swapped Christmas cards ever after.
He was married to Pat Moss. The frequently competed against each other in rallies. And, yes, that means he was Sir Sterling's brother-in-law.
R.I.P., Mr. Carlsson. It was people like you that made the golden age of motorsport so golden.
