And You Thought F1 Officiating was Bad
« on: July 22, 2016, 01:27:03 PM »
There has been a lot of discussion about the problems with the officiating at F1 races this year. Sometimes the stewards have waited until well after the race to even discuss infractions.

Well, NASCAR is at the other end of the spectrum. If you win a race and then post race scrutineering shows that you cheated......no problems!

Matt Kenseth won Sunday's Cup race at New Hampshire. His Toyota failed post race inspection. His punishment? He was docked 15 of the 44 points he scored the race. He kept the win. His crew chief was fined $25,000 (which I'm sure the team will pay for him.)

Truly draconian, innit?

NASCAR lets drivers keep the win so that fans don't go home and find out what they saw didn't happen.

When you see someone win, they won, end of story.

Not necessarily fair when you look at the sport as a championship, but it makes sense when you look at it as a spectator sport.

If it's optional to follow the rules of a sport, then to me it's not a sport, it's a highly stylised entertainment.

I don't think NASCAR makes much effort to hide that fact.

Maybe Nascar should bring in a new bonus points system....

10 extra points for each new dent in the bodywork
9 extra points for each part that falls off but the car keeps running
8 extra points for each collision with another competitor
7 extra points for any number of unintentional pirouettes
6 extra points for running out of fuel on the last lap
5 extra points for running over any pit crew member
4 extra points for causing a yellow flag
3 extra points for exiting the pit with less than 4 wheels
2 extra points for punching another driver or team member in the face
1 extra point for actually finishing the race without initiating a steward's inquiry

ps:   F1 could benefit from some of these also

The "1 point" idea is being initiated for junior-series drivers in 2017; any driver in a series eligible for FIA Superlicence points that manages to do the whole season without being penalised by the stewards will get 1 point towards their Superlicence application.
