We don't often get to see historic color footage of this quality. Enjoy!

I wish they still used this layout from the tunnel to the start finish.

Forget better engine sounds, I want the cars to screech through corners again!

It's bizarre to watch people just standing around trackside while the cars go tearing around.  Looking back it looks like they are all crazy, but it seems like it was quite normal as long as you were up on a sidewalk or standing on a bench, that you were 'safe'.

They did it at all the tracks. At Monza one year Von Tripps and Clark
tangled and some spectators were killed along with Von Tripps
Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

That was in 1961. It pretty much handed the WDC to Von Tripps Ferrari team mate, Phil Hill. (Trivia fact: Both American WDC's had a team mate killed in their championship year).

I can remember watching Jim McKay at Monaco on the old ABC Wide World of Sports. He was doing commentary standing on the sidewalk at the Grand Hotel hairpin with cars on track.

Look closely at the nose of the silver cars. That's not a Mercedes star, it's a Porsche crest. Also, I think the narrator sounds like it is Burl Ives.

Ah, I'd been trying to put my finger on who the narrator was.  Problem with kids growing up: I haven't seen Rudolph in a few years!
