If the modes can be switched by the driver, so be it. The current engine regs require the team to sandbag for most of the race. Q3 is about the only time all weekend that we can see F1 cars run on the limit.

I'm curious how engines have worked historically in F1.  I started following in the mid 90s where it wasn't unheard of for Ferrari to use 6 engines in a single weekend.

When the Cosworth ruled F1, were they still using multiple units per weekend?  Or would the same unit be rebuilt over and over again?

Personally, I like that engine development is as much a part of the sport as outbraking someone into a hairpin turn.  I miss when the teams could reprogramme the engines from the pit wall while the car was on track.

I appreciate the FIA doesn't want a team with deep pockets winning by using more fresh engines than their competition, but there needs to be room for a team with an inferior engine to upgrade it without penalty.

Oh what a shame Red Bull are being out gunned.  ;)

Get over yourselves guys, F1 has never been a formula for spec parity, in fact it's rules ensure the opposite.

My advice to Red Bull and Renault is to do a better job rather than whine about others. There are not the same  draconian restrictions anymore on engine develolment so either put up or shut up.  :P

Jeri, during the Cosworth era they did both, used whatever engines they felt they needed for a race and rebuilt  (between races) engines they felt were tired. There were also "factory teams" that got the latest upgrades ASAP and customer teams that got upgrades when available and paid for.

Although we would all agree that F1 is far from perfect lately, I hope we don't enter the "team bickering" this early on in the season.  Ever since the "friendly spat" between Seb & Lewis regarding "modes" at the press conference in Australia, there are more and more stories circling, where the top teams are already looking for clarification and underlining parts of the rule book!!

Comparing bits on the car, how a wing looks, double diffusers, intakes, fuel, engine modes, inconsistent penalties ... It's always something!

All the best,
Cal :)

Well, this will widen the gap between Mercedes and Ferrari...

I bet if Red Bull had the advantage they'd say this isn't fair
we need to change the rules so the others can catch us. Quit whining
