Both Vettel and Hamilton have a sense of F1 history.  At some point they must realize that a Prost/Senna showdown needs to happen while they're still at the top.  If it doesn't happen, I would imagine that's a regret they would have. 

Hamilton has already gone toe to toe with Alonso, Button and Rosberg.  Vettel and Kimi would be the only champions he hasn't competed with in identical cars.  (And of course the future champions...  maybe Ricciardo, probably Max, and, unless he gets derailed, Leclerc)

It would work, but I think it might cost some bodywork and at least a few disastrous races for them both.  They wouldn't be very supportive teammates though.  It would probably give Ferrari more exposure than they've had since the Schumacher era.

But I think Ferrari would never do it.  They prefer the option of having a #1 and #2 driver, even if the #2 driver is capable of occasionally beating their #1.  Unless they know something about the data that I don't, Vettel and Hamilton would be too evenly matched (though if anyone is asking my opinion here, I would say that Vettel would have the upper hand in most of the races with them in the same car).
