FP1...Bottas on top
https://www.formula1.com/en/results.html/2017/races/968/great-britain/practice-1.html

...and Bottas & Hamilton were on the 'slower' tyre. Interesting
-
Bottas still on top. Kimi ahead of Vettel and MV ahead of Daniel.

I think someone from Britain should do a proper preview for this race. Shake a leg guys! Tell us some history or interesting bits about the track, Silverstone, or why you still have a Queen.

Bottas get 5 grid spot penalty for gearbox change.

Precisely what I'm talking about on the GG post...it would have been a shame to miss this and lose a point because of a gearbox. I had Bottas for pole.

So what happens now? Does Bottas loose pole due to changing his set up slightly to suit the race rather than qualifying? It wouldn't surprise if that was what LH did hence just a third before the 8th spot on the grid.

It says something about the state of F1 that many of us believe that it will be very hard if not impossible for the best car in the field with one of the best drivers and on one of the best tracks to fight back from a 5 place grid penalty.
-
By the rules now whoever starts the race on pole
is the GG pole winner.

The turbulence from the back of the cars is huge and unless they address that the racing will not be that close.

I was not referring to the GG Dare but how Mercedes would approach qualifying and the race but it seems Silverstone is a circuit that set up changes would make much difference.
-
Interestingly Liberty seemed to be very keen to continue at Silverstone and said they plan to have discussions at the end of the season so all is not lost and as the drivers seem to revel in the high speed turns.

Silverstone is one of the historic tracks that should
never be lost. But my favorite remains Monza...might
have something to do with the Italian milkman we had
when I was a little kid.

Ha ha that made me laugh!
I quite agree there are tracks that should not be lost maybe we should start a list but you cannot add to the list with a reason!
- Silverstone - The first ever race held at the circuit was 2nd October 1948 (RAC International Grand Prix) and then the modern era from 1952 its fast sweeping bends challenge the driver, chassis and engine to the full this years pole was an average of 152 mph/245 kph.
-
2 Monaco a boring race everybody loves. Graham Hill won it
5 times. Fasy lap set this year by Kimi with a 1m 12.178. One
of the three crown jewels of racing, theo others being LeMans and Indy.
-
3. Spa - It's been around since the beginning and still provides great racing. It's not the 14 km monster that it once was. Eau Rouge has gone from one of the fiercest to a flat out kink. Still, the circuit and the famous (or infamous) weather usually lead to excitement.

I've stood at Eau Rouge in 2004 while V10's went through at 200 mph and its so much more than a kink the TV does not do it justice and it'll be interesting to see how today's car deal with it.
-
Eau Rouge is certainly an exciting, intimidating complex, but Cossie is right, over the years it has been straightened quite a bit. Originally it was almost a right hairpin before it went up the hill. I think you could also add
4. Suzuka. Hasn't been around as long as the classic European
circuits, but what a great track, with a good bit of history
attached.

Eau Rouge Straightened? I don't think so, I have carried out a search and in 2002 they placed a bollard to stop them cutting the entrance in but that was removed by the following year the only thing that has straightened it is the downforce of the cars going through there.
I think this year the buttocks of a few drivers will be tightening through there as although they have more rubber they'll be faster.
-
Eau Rouge was a bit rougher back when it was an actual road junction (See 1970 photo below), but that's not what caused the change. The reason that it isn't the monster that it used to be has much more to due with changes in the cars than changes in the track. The modern, high downforce cars are pretty much glued to the track. Most current cars can be driven through the corner flat out. Still, the g-forces jerk the driver up, down, left & right. If a driver does loose it there, it usually results in a massive shunt.
-
I quite agree Cossy and in comparison the run offs are not there when it was still a road. With the increased speed this year of the cars its going to be an interesting race.
A good picture! :good:
-
Taking the gravel traps out has made Eau Rouge easier for the drivers, but it should be more of a challenge with this year's cars at least.
