Hi everyone,

My name is Szymon, I’m second year student in Goldsmiths, London University and devoted F1 fan. As the new season is about to begin I was introduced to exiting project for the F1 fans. That is why I would like to ask for your opinion…

1. What is that you like the most about F1 GP?

2. How would you imagine contribution in F1 racing from spectator’s perspective in next 20 – 40 years time?

3. Do you prefer to watch F1 races by yourself or with your friends?

4. If there was an application or web system that would help you to participate in F1 world, what would that be?

Thanks for all replies; I will share with you with the outcome of the project.

Hard to answer all your questions in a short form.  But here goes:

1.  What drew me to F1 was Jacques Villeneueve.  What kept me watching F1 was enormous efforts to make cars a tenth of a second faster.  As for what keeps me watching now... well, it's just a complete mystery as what's going to happen.

2.  There's not much I expect to contribute as a spectator.  Hopefully take my family to some races, that's about it.

3.  I watch the races alone... but signed onto the chat room here.  I love being able to talk about it with someone!

4.  I'm not going to participate in F1.

1- The machines, the racing, the glamour and the history.

2- Also attend some races, hopefully a few international ones.

3- I tend to watch them with my mum (I live at home) so I tend to bore her with more detailed talk, but then I come here afterwards and discuss with like-minded people!

4- I think the option to re-watch races in full, to be able to follow a race in a single car or to be able to watch a race delayed from the perspective of a single team to find out how that team worked during the whole race.

1- ditto Williamsfan

2- attend some more races and eventually become an official if possible

3- alone, but love the internet discussions especially GPWizard

4- bring F1 comprehensively to the internet regardless of what country I live in or what format I want to enjoy it in.

Hiya sxzmon, hope you'll love on here.

1..Ditto Williamsfan, the drivers that drew me to F1 were Mansell, Prost and Senna.

2..I think my only contribution would be to attend races.

3..I like to watch the races alone as I enjoy the commentary and take in lap times and info, like Jeri I also like being in the chatroom when possible for the banter between friends over fav drivers and teams.

4..I would love a totally interactive tv coverage where you are able to switch cameras to different drivers, pitlane and telemetry.

I hope the replies you get will be helpful to you szymon.

Hi Szymon,
I Love the technology and  would like to see more technology than on the track than in the car park.As a follower of F1 for many a year (1960's) I discovered live timing on the F1 website and have friends coming round on race days to follow the race on TV and have the live timing going at the same time. This creates some arguments about strategy and gives you the oppurtunity to follow all the cars at once

USGP Indy 2011 - History, not Tilke!

1. The technology does it for me, too. I've followed F1 since my childhood in the 60's.

2. Greater access for the fans. This is one area where F1 could take a lesson from other series, like IndyCar and ALMS. More activities like the Pit Lane WalkAbout and driver autograph sessions, like the ones they had at the USGP, would make the fans feel more a part of the sport.

FOM and the FIA should definitely do more to get races where the largest numbers of fans are. Last year, tracks like Turkey and China had empty stands, while the entire continent of North America didn't even have a single race.

3. With friends. One of the best things about going to a race is to be with hundreds of thousands of other race fans. I would also include being in the Chat Room here during on-track sessions.

FOM does a good job with on-line Timing & Scoring. Their major shortfall is that large areas of the world have no live streaming webcasts of the races. Here in the US, the races are on a minor cable network that isn't available to large numbers of fans. Since FOM blocks webcasts of the races to the US, many long time fans, like me, have no way to watch the races.

1. What is that you like the most about F1 GP?

It's a very intellectual high-level competitive sport.

2. How would you imagine contribution in F1 racing from spectator’s perspective in next 20 – 40 years time?

I imagine that spectators would be able to communicate exactly what they want to see in F1 in the future and have the reasonable expectation that the powers-that-be will listen to and apply those desires in the way most compatible with F1 remaining a high-level competitive sport.

3. Do you prefer to watch F1 races by yourself or with your friends?

I prefer to watch it with my parents, who are both F1 enthusiasts. They both have good insights into F1 but rely on me to pick up on the stories that emerge/gain additional detail between races. Live commenting on the internet is a lot of fun.

4. If there was an application or web system that would help you to participate in F1 world, what would that be?

I don't think there is one for me as an individual - all the technology needed to participate in F1 is here (albeit much of it is geo-locked and/or is dependent on knowledge of underutilised resources) but the powers-that-be aren't thinking in terms of serving people at the moment, so a lot of the technology isn't as effective, widespread or well-known as it should be.

My name is Szymon,
hello Szymon

the international aspect. that all the countries can come together in somewhat friendly competition.

i'm old... been following F1 since '61/'62.. to me, seeing the car #s was a big deal, having international colors as livery was cool. i knew about the US open wheel series, and cars called "Bryant Heating and Cooling Special"  and 13 different colors and it was all too much. F1 gave me clarity. Now wings and all the barge board stuff turns me off, it has over complicated the man and machine meaning of racing. its added 'who has the most money in order to come up with the best application of aero in order to win'   --- over complicated, please, lets see cost cutting and get back to man+machine.
i'd also like to see a limit on the number of mechanics in the pits.. say 5.. so a couple have more than one responsibility in the pits... i hear this year a stop for tires will likely take only 3 seconds.
don't blink!
but none of this will ever happen - thanks for asking anyway Sad

my wife and i watch together. she's become a great fan and asks some brilliant questions that test my knowledge of the sport. want to include your better half in your passion? answer her questions- without belittling her- and don't make it complicated. if you make her feel stupid, you'll lose her.

i'd like to hear more from the drivers about how they race, drive, overtake. how often they make mistakes, their approach to racing, do they think they can win (really) or do they have small step goals, (a top 10, a top 5 etc)
