I can see you reasoning Scott but I think the idea, and it may prove misguided, is to allow the cars to close up enough to get into the slipstream down that whacking great straight that comes after the hairpin.
Oh and we mustn't forget it also gives some more changes of direction and a slower procession in view for all those lovely people, viewing F1 for the first time, seated in the stands all round that area.
