On Pitpass, they show the hairpin turn after a chicaine (see the link below).

Now, I know Herman Tilke is supposedly a track design genius (NOT), but wouldn't it have been much more exciting to have the chicaine AFTER the hairpin, so that at least if there were a battle going into the hairpin, it could continue into the chicaine?  As it stands, the hairpin is for nothing if they put a chicaine immediately before it.  This way pretty much guarantees a single file through the hairpin.

I can see you reasoning Scott but I think the idea, and it may prove misguided, is to allow the cars to close up enough to get into the slipstream down that whacking great straight that comes after the hairpin. 

Oh and we mustn't forget it also gives some more changes of direction and a slower procession in view for all those lovely people, viewing F1 for the first time, seated in the stands all round that area. Cheesy

Adding a second braking area before the chicaine with a short spurt of throttle in between will more than likely spread the cars out instead of bringing them together.
