USF1 to fit transverse gearbox to Type 1
« on: February 02, 2010, 11:58:00 PM »
Well Well this is a suprise and no mistake. :swoon:  This is either a Colin Chapman or John Barnard moment, or a brave trip the wrong way up a one way street.   :DntKnw:

Formula 1's only North American team has opted to use a transverse gearbox in its Type 1 Grand Prix car. The transmission which is being built in house with the collaboration of local specialists EMCO, was selected for reasons of packaging and is unique in modern F1.

Racecar Engineering journalist Jonathan Ingram was shown the design when he took time off from tha NASCAR media tour last month.

The USF1 Type 1 is likely to have more suprises in store, the full design will be revealed in the March issue of Racecar Engineering Magazine - which will be available here on the 12th Feb.

EMCO has been around since the 1930's. They make a wide variety of racing gearboxes. Everything from two speed dog boxes for USAC midgets to six speeds for LeMans series cars. Their boxes are used in most NASCAR series. (Cup, Nationwide, Trucks, Grand Am, ARCA, Rolex)
based in Chicago, they have race shops in both Indy and Mooresville (Suburban Charlotte).
