Running for charity
« on: February 17, 2010, 11:34:58 PM »
Evening you lovely people

I'm raising money for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) by running in the NF10 - a 10 mile run through the New Forest (that's in Hampshire, England).

I am not a runner and this is going to be quite hard. The furthest I have run so far is 5km on a treadmill.

For those of you that don't know much about diabetes (or those that think you do but don't):

Often referred to as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that permanently destroys beta cells in the pancreas, meaning that the body can longer produce insulin, type 1 diabetes is deadly without regular insulin injections.

Diabetes can lead to serious health problems including in worst case scenarios seizures, coma, and even death from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or ketoacidosis (caused by high blood sugar for prolonged periods).

The parts of the body that can be most affected by diabetes complications are the:

    * eyes
    * kidneys
    * nerves
    * heart and blood vessels
    * gums
    * feet

I'd like to raise as much money as possible and would really appreciate your support.

It's easy to donate online by credit or debit card - just go to my JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/Wayne-Davies.

JustGiving sends your donation straight to JDRF and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you're a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more.

I hope you'll join me in supporting JDRF.

Please send the link to all your friends, family and colleagues as well.

Thank you.

Wayne

Wayne, you got my support. Wayne's right, this is a nasty condition. I've got type 2 but only diet controlled, type 1 is real bad, you have to watch everything you eat and drink as well.

You're all sponsered up from me Slugger.

Just don't get too cocky with your training.

I threw in my two cents...now beef up a bit so you can make it through the race (and so I can catch you next year in the carts!).

Thanks for the support and sponsorship guys.

Scott, I'm trying to beef up a bit lol. Went to the docs to see what I can do about eating a bit more. Increased my medication dose so I'll see how that goes but I might have to go on insulin soon :-(

You might catch me but you'll never get past  :P

Lol good vid Wiz.

The start was like me last week when I tried the treadmill at 16kph. I thought my trainers were going to catch fire.

Just realised I didn't say in my original post that I'm diabetic myself lol.

Some of you knew but not sure everyone did. You do now :-)

My doc told me Friday that unless I knuckle down like I did at the beginning that I'll go on medication. Guess I'll have to cut down on food and increase my alcohol intake. Only joking, alcohol is the first cut back.  :'(

Have you tried a low carb diet Ian? It worked for me for 18 months in the beginning.
