Diamonds placed on McLaren steering wheels for Monaco

There is also a mention about the special helmet design for Lewis and Jenson.

Gpupdate.net, Today

Once again, the McLaren steering wheels have been encrusted with diamonds for the Monaco Grand Prix, courtesy of a partnership between the Woking team and Steinmetz. Both Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton will also be running with modified helmet designs, highlighting their years of title glory.

A number of diamonds have been raced in Monaco in past years, not least in the helmet of winner Kimi Räikkönen in 2005 and also on the front nose cones of the 2004 Jaguars, although the idea proved to be a costly one after a diamond was stolen following a Grand Hotel Hairpin crash for Christian Klien. Then the reigning Champion, Hamilton raced with a diamond-encrusted helmet 12 months ago

At McLaren, the individually crafted diamonds have been placed on the steering wheels of the two British Champions, with Button set to race for the team in Monte-Carlo for the first time this weekend.

"To be racing for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and using a unique Steinmetz diamond-crested steering wheel, which has been created especially for me, is a great honour," Button commented.

"The workmanship on the diamonds is beautiful and it will be a great addition to the most glamorous race of the year."

"They look absolutely incredible and add a real bit of bling to the cars," Hamilton added. "I won at Monaco in 2008 wearing a Steinmetz diamond-studded helmet, so I'm hoping it will bring me luck again this year."

'bling' on F1 cars and diamonds on helmets

so typically Monaco

what's next:

 'wet-look' chromium/alloy wheels?

sorry, but this sort of crap in F1 makes me cringe and almost vomit

A stunt like this backfired on Jaguar back in 2004 (I think). They mounted very expensive diamonds in the noses of the two race Jags. Christian Klien knocked the nose off of his car at the Hotel hairpin. The diamond was never found!  :swoon:

great memory cossie, it was at Monaco in 2004 and you think Steinmetz [the Israeli diamond dealers] would have learnt a lesson from it.

here's the story from the Guardian:

Jaguar's F1 tie-in loses its sparkle

James Sturcke The Guardian, Monday 24 May 2004 02.28 BST

Article historyJaguar's Formula One team had tried to bring a little extra sparkle to yesterday's Monaco grand prix.

Embedded in the nose cone of two of its cars was a button-sized diamond, as part of a promotion for the forthcoming Hollywood film Ocean's 12.

But Jaguar's afternoon lost its shine when the Austrian driver Christian Klien crashed his car and the £140,000 gem vanished.

Amid accusations of a publicity stunt, investigators were searching for the missing jewel last night.

Klien, 20, making his debut on the calendar's trickiest circuit, ploughed his green Jaguar into the barriers at the Mirabeau corner on the opening lap.

The car, with the flawless diamond the size of a shirt button set into a steel ring, was lifted off the track where it sat for nearly two hours. When it arrived at the Jaguar garage a mechanic discovered that its most valuable component was missing.

Klien said: "That will be the most expensive drive I'll ever take around Monte Carlo."

A diamond had been attached to Klien's car and that of his teammate Mark Webber as publicity for the sequel to the Hollywood hit Ocean's 11, starring George Clooney.

The film features a diamond heist and Jaguar bosses had set up the promotion with Steinmetz, an Israeli diamond dealer.

Jaguar said: "Christian lost his steering and hit the barriers, forcing him to retire. His car returned to the garage minus his flawless diamond which has yet to be found."

Last night there was speculation a fan may have pocketed the stone.

Nav Sidhu, a Jaguar spokesman, said: "Someone here has walked away with more than a motor racing souvenir.

I'd forgotten the bit about the movie.

Oddly enough, it was right after that week-end that Wizzo got his new Bentley!  ;)

Lol Jeri, but seriously have you had it valued since then?
