Will reduced Melbourne pitlane speed limit affect race?
« on: March 26, 2010, 07:29:58 AM »

In this piece Autosport doesn't think it will have much affect but I feel anything that slows the race stops is bad as it prevents teams from taking a chance, this measure almost certainly guarantees one stopping, will it be yet another snooze fest because of Charlie's intervention?

Once again we get the explanation it's for safety, F1 is a sport for grown ups and a real part of the attraction is the ability for the cars, drivers and teams to do things at speed, when are they going to allow the competitors to give us a show? >:(

The FIA has lowered the pitlane speed limit in both qualifying and the race for the Australian Grand Prix.

The speed limit is usually 100 kilometres per hour for qualifying and the race, but after a request from Formula 1 safety delegate Charlie Whiting it has been decided that it will be kept at the 60 km/h cap that is usually in place for practice.

The move is unlikely to have much affect on tyre strategy for the Albert Park event, with teams already believing they will only need to stop once in the race.

Except for Virgin, who will have to stop once for tires and again to to park it a few laps before the end.

It certainly is a disincentive to try a second stop, even if we all know it wasn't going to happen anyway. :tease:

On the plus side, hopefully we'll get to SEE more of the pitstops this round.  I got the feeling like the director was caught off guard in Bahrain, and we mostly saw cars pulling out of the pits.  I want to see these 4 second pit stops.

It might be the only action all day.

There's a strong chance of rain for the race. Since there is only one compound each for full and partial wets, might they go without a stop in the rain?

Interesting... what's the longest single 'stint' in motorsports?  I don't watch LeMans type racing, but I know they stop to refuel, and swap drivers.  Has anyone ever driven at top level speeds for 90 straight minutes?  Throw in some rain, and you're going to have some serious jangled nerves in those drivers.

Back in the 1960's, the F1 races were longer and were run without pit stops. Also remember, that was before the days of paddle shifters and driver aids.

In those times it was REAL motorsport (that I was not seeing yet), now there are every year new rules and some mess after the season.
