Guilty! But I'll not admit to that in a court of F1 law until we have a couple dry races start-to-finish!  :tease:

3 conclusions
  • A wet race is a good race
  • The softer tires mean that teams have to at least consider pit stops.  Soft/supersoft at all races from now on
  • Track design matters

one good race and one bad race so
F1 right now is 50% boring

I'm holding my breath on this one

nah Dare, F1 right now is 50% exciting and "the glass is half-full not half-empty".

the 'boys' are grasping the fact that a GP is no longer a 'sprint' of 15 to 30 laps to the next pitstop for a splash of fuel and super-clingy tyres but is a test of 'racecraft' over 50 or more laps. IMO as it should be.

as such the only boring races perhaps may be on the boring tracks designed by Herr Hermann Tilke [probably in accordance with the Fuhrer's - oops Bernies wishes]

The problem there though Sennaman is that quite a lot of the tracks on the 2010 calendar are Tilke designed venues  :(

yeah Williamsfan, and here is a list of them [from F1Fanatic.co.uk]:

Here’s this year’s [2009] calendar with the tracks entirely designed by Tilke or where he’s changed at least one corner:

Melbourne, Australia - corner
Sepang, Malaysia - track
Shanghai International Circuit, China - track
Bahrain International Circuit, Bahrain - track
Circuit de Catalunya, Spain - corner
Monte-Carlo, Monaco - corner
Istanbul, Turkey - track
Silverstone, Great Britain - corner
Nürburgring, Germany - corner
Hungaroring, Budapest - corner
Valencia, Spain - track
Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium - corner
Monza, Italy - corner
Marina Bay, Singapore - track
Suzuka, Japan - corner
Interlagos, Brazil - corner
Yas Island, Abu Dhabi - track

On top of that, the German and Japanese rounds are being rotated between two other circuits which aren’t hosting Grands Prix year, but will be on the 2010 F1 calendar.

These are the Hockenheimring, which was substantially re-designed by Tilke in 2002, and Fuji Speedway, which has also had a complete Tilke overhaul.

So now tracks go to him to just redesign a corner?  That is shocking.  Surely an established track should have the know-how to make adjustments to it's existing layout?!

Thanks for that list Sennaman, the situation is worse than I though in regards to Tilke!

Are there any Tilke success stories?  I don't know any - whether it's a track or a corner, neither the fans nor the drivers seem to like them.

There is one good corner at Istanbul Park, Turn 8. Opening up the approach from the swimming pool complex to Le Rascasse was a good thing. Other than that, it been a right mess. He even managed to make Fuji even worse than it used to be, no small feat.

There was one Tilke-free addition to the schedule in the past couple of decades - Indy. another reason The Evil Troll doesn't like it.

Does anyone know if Tilke even drives a car, sounds to me it's more likely he gets driven everywhere and we know chauffeurs are trained not to race, make sudden overtakes or movements of any kind. ;)

Tilke is building a private track in Atlanta... if that's a criteria, maybe we're a step closer to a USGP.  Certainly a race in an Olympic City is a feather for Bernie's cap.

The Atlanta track is a "Motorsports Country Club," i.e. a playground for rich older guys.
