Motown Turns 50
« on: April 14, 2010, 03:52:58 PM »
Motown Records was founded on 14 April, 1960, 50 years ago today. The label brought us The Four Tops, The Supremes, The Temptations, Jr. Walker, Martha & The Vandellas, Rare Earth and so many more. Motown is slang for Motor City, the label's Detroit home.

In my teens, I used to spend part of the summer with my aunt & uncle in a Detroit suburb. I'll always remember riding down Michigan Ave. in their brand new 1966 Fairlane 500 convertible with the radio on WKNR or CKLW playing Motown.

Here's one of my favorites, from the Four Tops.

“You can search the world over for the finer things, but you won't find a match for the American road and the creatures that live on it.”

Can't stand Motown, this is real music.

You mean you never tapped your feet to this one in the 60's Ian whilst watching birds dancing round their handbags in the municipal hall on dance nights?  ::)

Here is a song most of us oldies will remember, but as it's been covered so many times, most of us, including me, wouldn't guess it was an early hit on the Motown label.

This one even got the Otis Redding treatment as well.
