Yeah but in 1958 we could all play football or tennis in any residential street for hours on end cos the traffic was virtually non existent. The pavements were busier than the roads

I never knew that.  You actually call the sidewalks 'pavements'?   

In Canada pavement is just a paved area (flat, hard surface), usually made with asphalt or cement.  It's called pavement wether it's the street, a sidewalk or a school yard. 

I guess I learned another 'British-ism' today.

A path for us is a little trail, more often of dirt or gravel than pavement.

With you there Sennaman. I have a black car with a black leather interior, bloody dust magnet. It's especially bad for me as I am a real bad clean freak, never will I have a black car again.
