A man in America has staked his claim for 2007's most stupid driver after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.

Robert Drown managed to blast a hole in his limb as he tried to empty a loaded gun while driving, reports the Boston Channel.

The incident led to Drown veering across the road and crashing into another vehicle and a convenience store sign.

The 22-year-old was rushed to hospital and police said the incident was a case of poor judgement.

Drown narrowly avoided being entered into the running for the Darwin Awards, which recognise people who "have improved the gene pool by removing themselves from it".

The 2006 awards were recently announced with a number of particularly stupid people having lost their lives last year.

Third place went to a Brazilian man who tried to dismantle a rocket-propelled grenade by driving over it in his car.

When this failed, he tried hitting it with a sledgehammer. The resulting explosion killed him, destroyed six cars and his place of work.

Second place went to a man from Belize, Central America, who flew a copper wire-bound kite during a lightning storm. Predictably he was electrocuted and he should have known better as he was an electrician by trade.

First place went to two 21-year-olds from Florida who were found with their feet sticking out of a large deflated promotional balloon.

It seems that they had pulled it out of the sky and got inside of it to feel the effects of the helium. Of course, they died of oxygen starvation.
