No More Chevy!?
« on: June 10, 2010, 05:45:23 PM »
GM is trying to phase out 'Chevy', and replace it with 'Chevrolet' excusively.

The reasoning is that people outside of the USA don't know what a Chevy is.

http://money.cnn.com/2010/06/10/autos/gm_no_chevy/index.htm?hpt=T2

So, to our non-American friends I ask:
  • Do you know what a Chevy is?
  • Do you know what a Chevrolet is?
  • Are you shocked to know they are actually the same thing?

AutoWeek has the story, too.

Remember, it ends with the letter T. The proper pronunciation is "Shove or leave it."  :yahoo:

Chevy's aren't that exciting in the UK, we get models like the Matiz below and miss out on the Camero's.  ::)

As a Non American I think these questions are easy.

1 - A Chevy is an American car

2 - A Chevrolet is a Korean car that was once known as Daewoo.    - See simple.  ;)

Ah but wait there is the third question.........

3 - I am indeed shocked to learn they are the same thing.  :o

I'd like to see a Matiz or even a Cruze tackle a Nascar race. :D

When I was little I had a '57 Chevy Hotwheels car.  I wouldn't have ever claimed it was my favourite toy, yet I have incredible memories of it.  It was always there to play with, no matter how much paint chipped off, I could always take it on a 20 second cruise.

I'm a Ford girl through and through, and yet, when I hear the word 'cool', this is what comes time mind:

That's a Chevy

When I hear Chevrolet, I think of this:

That's LAME.

And besides, how are you supposed to sell Americans a car named after this guy?

(Nothing against the Swiss, just not sure that's what you want for the 'Heartbeat of America)

Louis and Gaston Chevrolet proved their automotive genius. They abandoned the GM owned car that still bares their name. The built Ford Model T race conversions with OHV heads under the name Frontenac.

I know that Chevy means Chevrolet (althought I live outside USA). Those are really beautiful cars, especially those from 60s! I hope that this summer I can see some of them at our annual local old cars and bikes exhibition. :D

At the moment. It was on the market though. Someone at GM decided that the cause of all the trouble was too many brands to choose from. They have closed Oldsmobile and Pontiac, sold Saab and their share of Subaru. They saved Chevrolet because it's the most recognizable brand, Buick because for some reason it's popular in China, and Cadillac because somebody switched them on and they are building world class cars again. The odd styling of the Camaro indicates that a Firebird should have been available. Aside from various Corvettes, my favorite is the '55 Belair hardtop.

I thought Corvette lost it design-wise beginning with the '68.  Pre '68 were the beauties.  A friend of mine had a '71 or '72 and it drove like a drunken whale - you could hardly keep it in a lane.  And what other car model went 12 (some would say 20) years without a significant update??  1980 brought in the plastic version, which didn't look much better, then they built the ugly hatchback in '86.  The newer versions are technically good, but they still look like crap...IMO.

I always look at a Corvette as being a Chevy as much as I see a Ferrari as being a Fiat.

I love the 70's 'Vettes, with those giant fenders.  They just don't make cars CURVY any more.
