New IRL Car Announcement 14 July
« on: July 02, 2010, 01:59:34 PM »
The IRL will announce it's new chassis on Wednesday, 14 July. That is the day after the Baseball All Star Game, traditionally one of the slowest sports news days of the year. The new cars will be rolled out for the 2012 season.

Here's The Star's IRL correspondent, Curt Cavin's piece on the subject.

I agree with him that Dallara and Lola have the best shot at it. I hope they go with both of them. The series needs multiple chassis and engines.

It would be nice for them to just open the field up.

I'm not fond of the crazier designs, but if the Deltawing beats the Dallara straight up, surely that counts for something.

I suppose the economics of an 'arms race' among suppliers don't fit IndyCar right now though.  I don't like IndyCar being a spec series, but it is better than nothing.

My son thought the Delta was a salt flat racer - it would look stupid on a racetrack.

I'm trying to keep in mind how unusual the first aero effect and ground effect cars must've looked, not to mention the different engine configurations.

I don't think the Delta looks safe... or sane... but if it provides the best racing, if it draws fans, then it's the right choice.

the rest of the world probably doesn't know what
the all star game is,

Don't change the cars too drastically or you'll
lose fans

They need at lest 2 and I'm with Jeri, just throw it open. In Indy's best days it was run what ya brung. I remember 500s when it seemed no 2 cars in the field were exactly the same.  :'(
