RBR 'Flexi' front wing, see photos - you decide
« on: July 28, 2010, 05:43:18 PM »

On the James Allen website he has posted some photos for comparison so we can judge for ourselves. Although the wings of both Red Bull and Ferrari have been cleared, mainly because photos cannot be relied on to be of the exact same parameters, for me there still seems to be something happening with the height in the RBR pictures.

I assume this is the key to the wing:

"Engineers estimate from this photo that the deflection on the Red Bull wing is 24mm, which is pretty impressive. The tests the FIA carry out in scrutineering allow a maximum of 10mm deflection at the endplates when a force of 500 Newtons is applied, which is around 50kg of downforce.

However in high speed corners, like Copse or Abbey at Silverstone, the wing will be generating more like 200 kg of downforce. So perhaps the test isn’t stringent enough."

So, once again, the spirit of the rules is in tatters, while the letter holds up just fine.

That's what F1 is about, and I love it!

I agree. (Man, I seem to agree with Jeri way too often lately!  :D). This is exactly what Whitmarsh called it, clever engineering. That is what F1 is about, kudos to Newey again.

Does seem Mr Newey knows how to read the regulations and see a way round the limitations.
