How Green are You?
« on: January 19, 2007, 11:18:40 AM »

Times are changing and I can see a head on collision between the car and the tree coming. Here in the UK we have recently seen some hatred for 4x4's and large SUV's due to their gas guzzling tendencies.

This got me to thinking, where is the 'green' issue going to stop? If 4x4's etc are banished for not being green and politically correct then what vehicle will be next? Are all vehicles with 3.0 litre engines ripe for attack?

I maybe wrong, but everybody I know buys a car with the biggest engine they can afford, mainly for performance - as do I. Does anyone on this forum honestly think how green is this car when making a purchase?

Ironically recent figures show that worldwide sales of large vehicles are stronger than ever, so will we ever change the mind of the average driver?

It is actually now law for all new cars to have emission and fuel efficiancy figures stuck on the cars.  There is also groups in Australia looking at trying to implement a system of rewards for people driving 'green' cars.

So depending on the proposals, an increasing number of people may yet start looking at the green stats before buying.

Not me though.

Emissions of sulphur dioxide have declined by 73 per cent over the last decade and now stand at 16.6 kg per capita. In comparison with other developed countries this is relatively low - at different extremes Canada and Norway emit 76.2kg/cap and 4.9kg/cap respectively  This decline is helping to reduce the incidence of acid rain in countries neighbouring the UK.

The main sources of air pollution are road transport and electricity generation. In 1999 electricity generation accounted for 65 per cent of all UK sulphur dioxide emissions and road transport was responsible for 69 per cent of carbon monoxide emissions. Reductions in emissions have resulted from new technologies, such as catalytic converters and gas desulphurisation devices as well as a general switch from coal to gas in electricity generation.

I'm afraid that if I could afford it I'm like probably most of us on here but I'd be straight on my way to the big AM shop thank you very much
