Site down today
« on: September 28, 2010, 10:08:58 PM »
Apologies to everyone who was locked out of the site today. I foolishly installed a piece of software in the background several months ago and all was well until it stopped working last week. Since then it has been intermittently causing the server to overload and shut the site down.

The auto uninstall procedure failed to work so I was forced to locate and remove the code from each individual page that was affected. So far since doing this things have remained stable and I hope it is the last we have seen of blank screens.

Thank you all for you patience and apologies once again. Rest assured if you ever see the site down you can be sure there is a wizard rushing around with his wand in his hand.

Most curiously, IE told me the site refused to display the webpage! It suggested I needed to log in. But, how do you log in if you can't see the log in page? Ah computers, gotta love 'em.

Good to see we are all back online, thanks Wizzo, :good:

It was only a day but I was starting to get sweats and shakes and had to resort to breaking out the scotch and trying to finish the biography on Bernie that I have never quite got round to.  :D

They have so much potential and power, but they can be very frustrating.

Me too, Lonnie. I started in Fortran IV and Watfive on an IBM 360 and a Digital 1170! No keyboards or monitors. We got our output on green bar tractor paper, or from a Cal Comp plotter.

Ha, you guys aren't so old...I started with Fortran IV on pencilled in cards as well in grade 10.  We had to wait 4 days to get our results back from the university.  I think it took about 2 months to do a simple program after de-bugging it a bunch of times.  Grade 11 our school got a commodore 64.  I got my first 286 after I finished college.

More code found yesterday which was trying to contact the manufacturers of the blasted software and it again overloaded the server when it didn't receive a reply.  >:D

All removed now so I am pretty confident we have a reliable site again, only time will tell.
