The piece is a bit fluffy, but it also left out the private or first class flights, best hotel suites and virtually all expenses picked up during the season and testing.  Most drivers also likely stay at top notch hotels while at HQ doing sim-tests as well.

I'm really very surprised that Bernie hasn't put a stop to it. After all, it's money changing hands in the sport and he isn't getting a cut of it!

 The only way for Bernie to stop it is by paying out more from FOM's fat wallet, ::) ensuring he keeps grids the right size. Pay drivers have been around in F1 even longer than Bernie; - well only just!  :D :DD  
I'm pretty convinced that Brabham had their share of supported drivers in their cars, allegedly that is. ;)
