Solar Death Ray
« on: February 01, 2011, 04:19:59 PM »
Check out this Solar Death Ray, built by 19-year-old Eric Jacqmain.

All I need now is a mountain on a Caribbean Island for this to 'pop' out of and my evil Wiz lair will be complete.  ::)

Reminds me of what we used to do years ago, on sunny days in those long summer holidays from school, with a magnifying glass on blades of grass and anything else we could keep in the right place to fry.  :D

Ok, but a magnifying glass took a little while...you see how fast that thing melts and burns stuff?  Wow.  If there was a way to adjust the angle of the concave, could you imagine the fun you'd have with neighbour's stuff?   :o

Gee, I wonder how the shed caught on fire? Did it have a window?  :swoon:

I saw this yesterday and was thinking to myself "I've got a couple of unused 20" dishes packed away in the garage"...might just be the thing to do to kill some time and have some fun!  :good:

That's awesome, I would love a go at building one.

There was one that struck me though, a worrying though. Just what do you have to be searching for on You Tube to find "Solar Death Ray". I worry about you Wiz.  :DD :DD

It appears to have a very short focal length. For a true death ray effect, you would have to make the array flexible so you could focus it at varying distances. Of course I suspect the maximum focal length is still quite short.

It looks like it was based on an old sat TV dish. The focal point would be where the receiver unit was.

Reminds me of Toy Story  :D. I used to fantasize about a solar gun which I could burn stuff with. Also, if a 19 year-old kid can do this. What would happen if a government would organize it?
