Blown floors require more fuel
« on: April 06, 2011, 10:02:15 PM »

So says engine builder Renault, - oh and their's has an advantage.
Perhaps that explains Renault power taking 1st and 3rd place in Oz, a higher than normal fuel consumption circuit.
The following is from a longer piece, about Renault Sport F1 Maylasia preview, on thef1times.com website today.

Did you know…

The blown floors prevalent in the field this year mean that engine and exhaust management is even more crucial than in previous seasons. To power a blown floor effectively and generate additional downforce, an engine must produce significant amounts of exhaust gas. Simply put, the more fuel burned, the more exhaust is produced and potentially more downforce. Since the RS27’s fuel consumption rate is extremely good, the Renault-equipped teams were able to burn 10% more fuel than normal during the Australian Grand Prix without running out of fuel, therefore giving more exhaust flow to its partners using the blown diffuser.

Wouldn't 10% more fuel make the car 10% heavier?

Am I the only one who thinks that these people are outright lying about their cars?

True, if you're burning 10% more fuel, you are carrying 10% more fuel. But that doesn't mean 10% more than the competition, It means 10% more than you were burning before it became necessary to have a blown floor. The extra is due to weird stuff like holding the throttle open under braking to keep the exhaust flowing as you enter the corner. If everybody has a blown floor, and everybody is trying to maximize the effect, then everybody is burning more fuel. Oh, and yeah, everybody lies about their car all the time. Can't give away those speed secrets.  ;)

Luckily for them, the Renault is one of the most economical engines of the field, if you can use the term 'economical' in F1.  ;)

Depends on your definition of 'economical'.   For the amount of work that an F1 engine does, it uses very little fuel.  Consider the car in your driveway.  Drive it with the throttle wide open for 90 minutes and see how much gas it uses.  Then triple that number (at least) to make up the power differential.  Even a Toyota Prius is a guzzler by comparison.

What? You can drive a car WITHOUT the throttle wide open? Who knew?  :DntKnw:

It's the only way to keep a Yugo moving, ain't it Cos?  :tease:

If anyone is in any doubt check out Yugo's special hand warming device on page 39 of Time's worst car list.  ;)

I see the list also includes the Ford Model T, Bucky Fuller's Dymaxion, Crosley Hot Shot, MGA Twin Cam, Corvair, Pinto, Jag E-Type V-12, all of which were also tremendous cars. Even the Amphicar & King Midget were great fun. I guess that's why Time has never really made it as an auto enthusiast's mag.

My Yugo is 22 years old with over 200,000 on the clock. It's happily cruise all day on the far side of 100 mph. (Hey, I never said it was stock  ;)  ) Not bad for a car I got for free.
