Red Bull eye KERS fix
« on: April 19, 2011, 01:42:21 PM »

If RB gets it up and running proper shame on the rest the field

.  Red Bull are confident their KERS problems will be consigned to history by the team the European season kicks off.

Sebastian Vettel won the opening race in Australia without the use of KERS and then experienced intermittent issues with the device en route to his victory in Malaysia.

It was more of the same at the Chinese Grand Prix as glitches prevented both Vettel and Mark Webber from using the device throughout the race. The problems certainly played a part Shanghai in Vettel's sluggish start led to him dropping from pole to P3 at the first corner.

The team now have a three-week break to fix the "niggly issues" and team boss Christian Horner believes they will have ironed out the problems when they hit Turkey at the start of May.

"We have got another upgrade of KERS coming for Turkey," team principal Christian Horner said.

"It is getting better and better as we get more understanding of the system and more mileage on it.

"So I am confident that the niggly issues that we have with it, we have fixes in the pipeline."

Perhaps the RBR cars do run best without the KERS, just maybe with the KERS functioning the Bull's may not get anymore advantage.

Obviously it will help their starts, but I'm not convinced that KERS is entirely to blame for Vettel getting jumped off the line in China. Even the most lighting starters have off days, it's awfully convienient to blame KERS for being beaten in Shanghai, but it was the strategy that brought down Seb, IMHO.

True. Hamilton says being on fresher tires at the end was the difference that gave him the win. And though the track did not rubber in as much as they expected it to, Webber being on fresh softs at the end allowed him to set a fast lap 1.4 seconds quicker than the next closest car. For a change, as far as the race itself goes, RB seem to have gotten Mark's strategy right and Seb's wrong.

Mark had to take an agressive strategy, while it's natural to put the pole sitter on a conservative one.  Can't really blame RBR for not quite having a handle on the tires yet.  (They can't even figure out KERS...)

Mark stumbled into the 'save your tires' strategy that McLaren chose on purpose.

I think we're going to see a lot more pit stops for the rest of the season.

Red Bull deliberately put mark on the hards at the start because they thought he would not be able to use the softs effectively in heavy traffic in the early going. When he actually dropped back a bit a lot of people thought they had messed it up again. But when all the other runners went on hards, the fuel went low, and the track got as good as it would get (at least on line) he was able to use the softs to pass what 4 or 5 people in the last stint? I don't think they stumbled on the strategy, I think they chose it and it worked out even better than they hoped because Mark just drove the wheels off the car.
