Indy's use of a four lap run for an average time is unique as far as I know. I doubt F1 would go for that. The current system will work just fine once people realize that Webber's drive in China was very remarkable and will not be duplicated on a regular basis. And it wouldn't hurt if the FIA would pop out with an extra set of options or two.  :D

Surely the answer is having extra sets of tyres the further you get in qualy. As far as i remember, the cars get 3 sets of hard and 4 sets of softs. Just make it 3 and 3 for the weekend and give a new set for those in Q2 and a further new set for those in Q3. Any additional sets that arent used get returned. Currently the teams use between them 168 sets of tires. This way, the teams would use 171 sets of tires over the weekends. atleast on dry racing weekends anyway. Plus it reduces the impact of running well in qualy.

[Unless... your pole time is the average of your best x laps (4?).  If you set less than x, then your average will be pathetic.  It adds tension, because it's not about one perfect lap now, but x.  I believe Indy 500 qualifying is an average, so it's not all that foreign a concept for motorsports.

Like your thinking Jeri - would add that times must be made on continous run.

No returning to pits and coming our for single lap runs as they basically do now.

I believe Indy is the average speed of three or four laps.
