Worst who did, best who didn't
« on: June 18, 2011, 12:17:52 AM »
Ok we all have opinions on who is the best driver  ever to start a race in F1, some will say with all his titles Schumacher, more will say Senna, some say despite his lack of titles it's Moss, but who do people think is the worst driver to make it to F1, who really shouldn't have done?  Also who do you consider the best driver to never have made it?
For me the worst is a tie between Philppe Adams and Taki Inoue.  The best never to have made it?  Well for me its Gil DeFerran.

Opinions please....

I only started watching in the Concorde Era.

I missed plenty of awful racers whose only qualification was enough money to buy a customer chassis and engine.

Heck, Eccelstone himself is a former (unsuccessful) F1 driver.

As for the best who never made it... Greg Moore was taken from motorsport far too early.  I know he'd fit right into F1

Too many bad drivers to think about. Best who never made it AJ Foyt. he won Indy 4 times using roadsters and mid engined cars, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Daytona 24, the Daytona 500, and the IROC twice. He has more Indy car wins than any other driver, and more National Championships than any other driver. He matched Dan Gurney's lap times in the Ford Mk4 at Le Mans. He took over the T-Bird Swap Shop Porsche 962 at Daytona after his car retired and matched Bob Wollek's lap times in the dark, in the rain, first time in the car. You may not like the man but you have to respect his talent.

Greg Moore could well have been the next Canadian hero in F1.  He was that good.

As for someone who shouldn't have been there, but was, recently I'd have to say Badoer.  Not many drivers who could take a Ferrari that was regularly taking podiums and bring it in at the tail end of the field.

I'd have to go with Foyt, too. He excelled in every type of race car he ever drove.

I'm not that old so my memories are limited.  :D

Worst - Piquet Jr

Best of my time - Well this is hard, Schumacher, Senna, Hakkinen, Alonso?  The older drivers I always thought sound excellent were Jim Clark and Graham Hill.

The question is the best driver(s) that DIDN'T make it to F1.

Ah, the things that could have been had AJ Foyt made it to F1. Can you imagine? I could picture him climbing out of his car today to choke Charlie Whiting for taking too long to turn out the red lights....then getting back in his car and placing 1st.  :good:
Kimi's back! Future double WDC.

Foyt would have brought a lot of colour and character alright, same could be said for Tony Stewart!  I'm almost ashamed to say I'd forgotten Greg Moore, am I right in saying though that Greg grew up watching Indy/Champ cars and had no great desire to do anything other than drive single seaters in the US?  He didn't particularly want or need to be in F1.

I'm pretty sure I remember that there was already interest from F1 teams for Moore when he died.  There was sure a lot of talk about it.

There have been far worse than Piquet Jr if you are basing it on his actions at Singapore he was in a loose loose situation as if he had said he was not crashing then he would have lost the drive anyway. But I diversify!!
The period of pay drivers back in the 70/80's brought along too many to mention.

Of course Foyt thought F1 was kind of Sissy, though he did say he thought Clark would do well in a Sprint Car!! :yahoo:

I can think of two drivers I'd nominate for the worst driver to make it to F1. First, former ABBA drummer & back-up singer Slim Borgudd. The other drove for one of my favorite teams: Super Aguri's Yuji Ide. After only 4 races, the FIA took his Super Licence back.

Back when CBC still showed F1 racing, and Brian Williams would fill in for for Martin Brundle during the Canadian Grand Prix (while Brundle was racing Le Mans), they interviewed Moore on air.  He remained committed to his contract in CART, but certainly seemed excited at the prospect of following Villeneuve into F1.
