F1 vs. NASCAR at Montreal
« on: June 18, 2011, 12:51:41 PM »
I just heard this on Radio Le Mans' Midweek Motorsports:

The NASCAR Nationwide Series cars record at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is 144 mph, in the dry. Last Sunday, in the pouring down rain, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG F1 Safety Car was lapping the same circuit at 158 mph.

Just a little something for your next discussion with a NASCAR fan.

Time for NASCAR to change the regs and pick up 35 or so Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG's I'd say  :tease: :tease:

158mph lap from the safety car.  :o

I really didn't think it was going that hard?

Honestly, I wonder if there wasn't a speed translation c*ck-up in that story.  Don't forget we measure speed in kph in Canada.  It seems a bit insane that the SLS could average 158mph over a lap in Montreal.  I'm not so sure an F1 car could do that in the dry.  Vettel's record lap works out to about 210kph after all.  For that matter, I don't think a NASCAR could actually average 144mph over that track either (which works out to 230kph).  If it did, I think we're watching the wrong cars... :DntKnw:

Ok, I tried it again, and if the SLS was doing 158mph over a lap, that equals 254kph, which means its' lap time (on a 4.361km course) would be 58 seconds...beating Vettel's lap record by an impressive 15seconds.

I'm hoping my math is right...

But I guess that even if they were quoting kph by accident, if the SLS was doing 158kph and the NASCAR guys did 144kph...your point is still true.   :o

Honestly, the SLS safety car is specially built for the job and is probably lighter and more powerful the the Nationwide Cars. NASCAR builds them to be slow otherwise the would be going 200+ at the speedways.

I re-listened to the Midweek Motorsports podcast.

John Hindhaugh does just say that they were "turning 144" and turning 158's."
