Fully-electric GT car tests at Motorland Aragon

A glimpse of EV's future in motosport? Todt must be in 7th heaven.                  
Impressive stats for the car, but Le Mans might prove a bit tricky on one charge.   

The first pictures a GT car that could point towards the future of motor racing have been released by the Spanish Quimera company.

The AEGT was put through its first paces by World Touring Car Championship racer Pepe Oriola at the Motorland Aragon track in Spain, where the fully-electrically-powered car will be officially launched next month.



The car is capable of producing a claimed maximum peak horsepower figure of 700bhp, giving it a top speed of over 180mph and a 0-62mph time of around 3.5 seconds.

A second prototype is scheduled to hit the track in early 2012, and Quimera ultimately hopes to establish a fully-electric series for the AEGT to compete in.

Quimera chairman, Javier de Rocafort, said: "This car is manufactured to show that EV cars can be developed at racing performance. We want to showcase the technological potential and invite people to start thinking about future professional motorsport alternatives.

"This is why we would like to further develop the car and the concept and organise exciting races as soon as we have enough cars/teams committed. Anybody willing to test the car will be more than welcome to join the official test to be organised."

They have a problem with EVs similar to that of diesels. Electric motors produce maximum torque at stall, or just as the motor begins to turn. It can be more easily controlled though, by limiting the current to the motor at low speeds. I have been racing electric R/C cars for 30 odd years and before they got the circuitry right to limit low end power, wheel spin was a serious problem.
