"as much as we can"
« on: October 04, 2011, 01:38:26 PM »

Hi, I am a non-native English speaker.
I can't hear Rob saying "as much as we can".
Would you please tell me what he said exactly.

I know it's wrong to use but I can hear "as possible as we can"
And "Destroy his race, possibly you can"

At about 35 to 39 seconds into the video Rob Smedley says: -

"Hold Hamilton as much as we can, destroy his race as much as we can, come on boy!"

Hope that helps you Aomi.

We were just discussing this in another thread. Some of us (like me) think that Massa is being told to interfere with Hamilton. Others think Massa just being told to race him.

Even we native speakers aren't sure what Smedley is trying to say.  ;)

I didn't know you were native speakers of the Smoggies' Teeside dialect (derived from Yorkshire & Yakka) in Ohio, Cos.  :D :tease:

Not just Ohio, but southeast Ohio. Appalachian English is English in its purest form, y'all!  :P  Even our regional music can be traced back to the Elizabethan period.

Your English seems very good, Aomi. Have you ever lived in an English speaking country?

It strikes me as a colloquial reinforcement of the previously-stated "Hold Hamilton as much as we can", implying that the reason for the instruction was that if Lewis couldn't go at the speed he wanted, he'd be unable to convert his strategy into an optimal result. I don't think anything more serious than that was intended, nor did Felipe interpret Rob's statement that way. Bear in mind Rob's job is to tell Felipe what he needs to do, not translate what he said to every English-speaking mindset in the entire world.

Thank you cosworth151. No, I haven't lived in an English seaking country...

Thank you every one for helping me!
