I like 1 and 2

•Convict sues couple he kidnapped for not helping him evade police
•Man illegally brings gun into bar, gets injured in a fight, then sues bar for not searching him for a weapon
•Young adults sue mother for sending cards without gifts and playing favorites
•Woman disagrees with store over 80-cent refund, sues for $5 million
•Mom files suit against exclusive preschool over child's college prospects
•Man suing for age discrimination says judge in his case is too old
•Obese man sues burger joint over tight squeeze in booths
•Woman sues over movie trailer; says not enough driving in "Drive"
•Passenger's lawsuit says cruise ship went too fast and swayed from side to side
•Mother sues Chuck E. Cheese – says games encourage gambling in children

Possible cases on the longlist:

* Personal injury lawyers filed a suit against Greg Mortenson for duping book readers across the USA into buying his books, and some other lawyers are suing President Carter on similar charges. Next time you don't like a book, maybe try getting a refund instead?

* Starbucks sued because when their tip jars are stolen, chasing after them can be dangerous. There was me thinking chasing after anything could be dangerous...

* Man sues casino for allowing him to gamble $1 m when drunk. I'm taking a wild guess that he didn't win his bets...

* An artist sued someone for selling balloon dog bookends, claiming to have invented the concept. Did he never get an entertainer visit him when he was a child? You will be relieved to know this case was soon dropped, and the disputed bookends even increased in sales during the case...

* Personal injury lawyer (do I detect a theme?) sues local gym for not serving breakfast any more.

* Resident sued because lawn is slightly untidy. I'm sure this case can be trimmed to size pretty quickly...

* Seismologists sued for not predicting an Italian earthquake. The science isn't that precise yet...

* Man sues gas company because he blew up his own house and other occupants of the house were injured. I think he may be suing the wrong entity there...

* Laywers with too much time on their hands are suing MySpace, Facebook and Twitter for sending messages confirming to people that they've taken them off the text message messaging lists.

* Two women have a fight in a restaurant toilet and then sue the (male) owner for not breaking up the fight. How about, you know, avoiding having the fight in the first place? Would have been simpler...

* Someone known only by their initials and informed guesswork sued Twitter for breaking a UK-only injunction. Note that Twitter is not UK-based and is instead bound by USA law...

* Mum sues school cheerleading squad for leaving daughter out of the cheerleading team (who'd been feuding with another cheerleader on the team over a boy). Surely a team is better off if its members aren't arguing with each other? This case was literally laughed out of court. Accompanied by the prosecution being declared guilty of crimes against grammar and subject-verb agreement.

If Lawyers had to pay a personal fee for frivolous lawsuits, it might cut down on stuff like this. But all they invest is a bit of their time, somebody else pays the fees.

This has to be the worst I've heard in a long time. A man running to catch a train was struck by another train. Part of his body was thrown 100 feet and struck a bystander on the platform. She's suing his estate, and the courts are letting her do it!

In court does that make it 'the party of the first part'.  :DntKnw:  :D

In the UK, there's a "loser pays" rule, meaning that if the court thinks your case is stupid (or you're the defendant and the judge thinks the case was 100% justified), you pay the fees for both sides and possibly a compensation fee depending on the accusation. It reduces the number of frivolous cases a lot... ...but as the attempt to sue Twitter for breaking a UK-only injunction shows, it doesn't remove them all.

Loser pays does not affect the lawyers, only the losing client. If the lawyers had to open their wallets, they might refuse some of these cases.

Brilliant Lonny.  I'd love to carry that across the board.  If a banker loses money, or causes a client to lose money - pay up.  If a CEO runs a sinking ship, he needs to pay the piper, not get handed a golden handshake, and finally in ANY business, if the company has a bad year, the employees should expect to share the pain...as long as they share the gain in good years.  Just like business owners take home less when we have a bad year, whether it was our fault or not.

Rant over...

Well at least as a business owner your role can't just be made redundant Scott,  :P

That's why I lost 100 lbs in the year after we lost our biggest account.  ;)

Sure it can.  McDonald's opens up down the street, or Marriott opens up a Courtyard hotel.  Finito bandito.  We're just lucky (if you can say that) they haven't tried feasibility studies around here yet.  The whole business would be redundant.

Actually I worked at a company that had a 'black Monday'.  We locked ourselves in our office (me and my assistant) while we watched a full third of the company walked out to the parking lot with boxes by security.  We were just lucky our department was a bit of a linch-pin in the company.

There's a world of difference in witnessing the long knives to actually feeling them cutting your job Scott, I've had both happen in the last couple of years and I know which I prefer.

This is correct except when the lawyers are of the "no win, no fee" type which have become increasingly prevalent in certain sectors of British law. If such a lawyer accepts a case and loses for whatever reason, they get the bill that would otherwise have been delivered to the client.

For the most part, employees round where I live get to share the pain in lean years and never get the benefit in good ones. CEOs and bankers (along with most other specialist professionals), on the other hand...
