Adrian Sutil will stand trial in a German court later this month after officially being charged with causing grievous bodily harm.
The charge relates to an incident in April last year when Sutil allegedly attacked Eric Lux, the co-owner of Luxembourg Investment Company Genii and the Lotus F1 team.
The then-Force India driver was out celebrating Lewis Hamilton's Chinese GP victory at the M1NT club in Shanghai when the incident happened.
Sutil reportedly stabbed Lux in the neck with a glass with the latter requiring 24 stitches. According to German newspaper FAZ, the doctor who performed the procedure told the businessman that the severe cut was just millimetres away from an important facial nerve.
Sutil subsequently apologised, saying the injury was completely unintentional as he was trying to pour his drink over Lux's head, however, the Munich District Courthas opted to go ahead with proceedings.
Sutil will face the courts later this month and could be sentenced to a year in prison if found guilty.
Hamilton is reportedly likely to be called as a witness.
