I don't even remember it being on TV, I guess low audience figures killed it.

BBC made the mistake of running it opposite of ITV's "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here"

Many a good program are lost to inane reality shows

Finally saw the last episode,I put off watching it because
the series was so good I hated to see it end.

Great job BBC ffor not having a 2nd season. That's another thing
about British tv I don't get, they've had many outstanding series
with high rating and just stop production

The BBC, the biggest programme maker in Britain, is funded by a tax on all us peasants over here Dare. Because of this BBC series are made for home consumption, if they don't do well in Britain they get canned.

Independent TV producers can keep making series that bomb in the home market if exports cover the costs, however the terrestrial independent sector here has been fighting to stay alive and similarly is forced to concentrate on recommissioning only high rating shows for British TV.

The BBC has had a more traditional approach to story telling.  Each 'series' has a beginning, middle and end.  One one level, I appreciate that you hate to see something special end.  On another level though, how many open ended American TV series simply ran longer than they should have, and a brilliant first season is followed by 5 seasons of lesser returns.

I don't know about production schedules, but in Canada, our TV shows film an entire 'season' before it airs.  Production is then shut down without knowing if the show is a hit or not.  (I guess the assumption in Canadian TV is 'no'...)  It might be the same in BBC world.  The show is done, everyone moves on to the next project and putting everything back together might be impossible.
