Oh, THAT National Anthem
« on: March 28, 2012, 01:00:42 PM »
The organizers of the International Shooting Grand Prix in Kuwait had a brain fade moment during a medals award ceremony. When Kazakh gold medallist Maria Dmitrienko received her medal, the arena sound system rang out with the obscene, English language parody anthem from the movie Borat: Cultural Learnings of America Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

The tournament officials blamed the mistake on internet confusion. "The DJ searched for the national anthem of Kazakhstan on the Internet and the first published reference was the anthem parody of from the movie Borat," said head coach of the Kazakhstan national shooting team Anvar Yunusmetov, after attending a briefing in Astana.

F1 made a similar mistake at least once. When the Jordan team won its first race, God Save the Queen was played during the awards. The Most Irish Eddie Jordan explained in no uncertain terms that his team was Irish, not British.

Not to mention the time when Alan Jones won the 1977 Austrian GP. I know Australia has one official (Advance Australia Fair) and two unofficial national anthems (Waltzing Matilda and Khe Sahn). However, this does not excuse the organisers playing "Happy Birthday" on the podium. In case you were wondering, they were nearly 4 months early for it to be Alan's birthday....

The response is (perhaps mercifully) left unrecorded...
