50 years ago today, 23 July 1962, the first trans-Atlantic TV broadcast via satellite took place. Telstar 1 changed the world. Of course, the broadcast didn't last long. Geosynchronous orbital technology hadn't yet been perfected, so the broadcast could only take place during a small part of each orbit. The antennas had to track the satellite across the sky.

Later, the British band The Tornadoes put out the record Telstar. It was the first time a British band had the #1 song in the U.S.

Yes, I'm old enough to remember it. I thought it was the coolest thing ever!
