As Newey makes his latest admission regarding blown diffuser, isn't they are recognizing their failure without this tool? To be fair, RBR has been always a concern about this ban, but they played down the drop of performance in a logic that, other teams will be suffering from it as well. But such blunt comment certainly explains their dominance last year.

Adrian Newey admits that the banning of the exhaust blown diffuser is hurting Red Bull's competitiveness this season.

Having pioneered the concept throughout the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the FIA outlawed diffuser blowing for this year. With Sebastian Vettel having secured a dominant world championship victory last season, neither Red Bull driver currently tops the standings as its advantage has all but disappeared, and Newey told Autosport that the regulation change had affected Red Bull more than the other teams.

"It's pretty much as we feared before the season started," Newey said. "Having explored exhaust blowing technology quite heavily for two seasons and then having that taken away together with other changes like the front wing flexibility [test rules], hurt us quite a lot. Probably more than other people because we had been exploiting it for longer. It has taken a while to try to understand what we need to do and to recover."

It appears that Red Bull will spend some of the time before the Belgian Grand Prix working on how to make the car perform under the new engine regulations, with Newey revealing it was yet to make changes following the engine-mapping clampdown.

"We've been working with Renault and were suddenly faced with a clarification that was a different interpretation to what we thought we were operating to. That's where we are and we've got to go back and have a fresh look."

I would be more suprised if Adrian was not admitting to the obvious, ie. blown diffusers and flexi wings being the difference in the last 2 seasons. Mind you this is probably the first time I can remember Adrian, or anyone at Red Bull admitting to their advantage from flexing front wings. They've always previously claimed that the wings could pass even the new heavier weight tests without any trouble, and there was no substance to the reports, photos or videos, of their cars dipping wings under load in the corners.  :crazy:

What goes around comes around and imagine how much better the Brawn (aka Merc) could have gone in 2010 if the double diffuser wasn't outlawed, or how well Renault (aka LotusGP) could have gone with their mass dampers, or this seasons special brake ride height stabilisers, that suddenly got banned. Red Bull have had a good run in the last two years with their special features, but I really think if they are honest the new tyres have caught them out maybe worse than anyone else this year.  

I have to take issue though with Adrian's rather clever word play around the engine mapping subject; sure you were operating to a different interpretation Adrian - your own invented one.  ::) With the correct interpretation now enforced you'll have to find a new area in which to bend the rules.  - Ah! Now that's maybe why the FIA have leaked the existence of the manual ride height thingy on the Red Bull car, they're preventing yet another Newey misunderstanding of the rulebook taking hold.  :D

Adrian's ideas have been shut down before.  Give him a few more races for another update and watch...

Agreed...unless the cars all all built to the same spec EVERY team will push a rule to the absolute limit and possibly a toe over the line due to different interpretation of the rule(s). Some teams are blessed with brilliant designers and I suspect with brilliant lawyers as well looking for exploits as well!  :D

Formula 1 has had a number of great designers through the years, but I don't think anyone has designed more championship winners and iconic cars than Newey. I say that with a deep bow to Colin Chapman who pioneered as many game changing designs as anyone else.
