Happy Birthday, A. J.
« on: January 16, 2013, 01:43:09 PM »
Happy 78th birthday to Anthony Joseph Foyt, Jr. Born in Houston, Texas in 1935, A. J. was the son of legendary racing mechanic Tough Tony Foyt. He became one of the most dominant American racers of all time. He won the Indy 500 a record 5 times. He won more Indy car race than anyone else, 67. (15 more than 2nd place Mario Andretti) In 1964, he won 10 of the 13 Indy car races held. He won Le Mans once, Sebring once, the 24 Hours of Daytona twice and the Daytona 500 once. He's the only driver with at least 20 wins in each of USAC's four major divisions: Indy cars(67), stock cars (41), sprint cars (28) and midgets (20).

Probably the most accurate thing I ever read about him: A. J. Foyt has always believed in God, America and himself -- and not necessarily in that order!

Happy Birthday, A. J.!  :good:

I was an Andretti fan during the Foyt/Andretti wars, AJ was brute force, Andretti was skill and finesse. Then AJ won Le Mans (with another fav of mine, Dan Gurney) using his head, maintaining a pace, albeit a very fast one. I was impressed. Later he was racing at the Daytona 24, retiring with car problems. The owner of the Leading Porsche offered AJ a stint in the car. It was raining and at night and Bob Wollek, a highly respected Porsche driver, was livid, with visions of AJ crashing out of the lead. Within a handful of laps AJ was matching Wollek's times and brought the car back safe and sound. I was very impressed. Happy Birthday and many more AJ. I hope Sato takes him back to the front.
