Red Bull dumps Magneti Marelli alternators
« on: May 05, 2013, 05:06:31 PM »

Seems Renault will make any changes for de-facto factory team.  ;)

Red Bull has dumped its alternator supplier, the media source Italiaracing reports.

Last year, the world champion team was dogged by a recurring reliability problem with its alternators, supplied by Italian company Magneti Marelli.

"I want Renault to separate from its supplier Magneti Marelli and use someone else," team owner Dietrich Mateschitz declared last September.

Italiaracing, adding that Magneti Marelli continues to supply alternators to Lotus, claims Red Bull's new supplier in 2013 is Tag.

I think Ferrari has long used Magneti Marelli. Also, the other Renault supplied teams didn't seem to have any problems with the alternators.

Maybe Renault just got a deal on Valuecraft alts from Auto Zone.  ;)

They use the Mclaren's alternator now. How about that, jumping from Ferrari's to Mclaren's  :DD :DD

It sounds like Magneti Marelli are being made the scapegoat here.  Many teams have used their electronics over the years without a recurring issue like this, so it strikes me as an installation issue, rather than a defective component.

RBR's advantage comes from the Adrian Newey aerodynamics.  The only thing that lets the rest of the grid even compete is that RBR doesn't have the same mastery of the insides of an F1 car!

I wonder if that was part of the problem. Newey is famous for how tightly he forms the body around the internals. Maybe there wasn't enough air flow around the alternator to keep it cool.
