Massa's Practise Crash
« on: May 25, 2013, 03:19:57 PM »
I didn't see practise but I did see a quick glimpse of Massa's crash. Looked a nasty one, was something wrong with his car??

He locked up & went into the barrier at Sainte Devote. They had to replace the gearbox. I don't know if the box caused the shunt or was damaged as a result of it. The car wasn't ready for quali, so the 5 place grid ding for the replacement is moot. Massa will start from the pits.

Ferrari attributed it to driver error, no mechanical problem.  He locked up the wheels over the bumps at the end of the tunnel and Voila - kiss the wall, then kiss the barrier (they noted that it has been moved even further back, so there is enough time to bleed off some speed if a driver gets in trouble.  I wonder if they had to give up some bleachers to do that?).

Sorry for Massa, Ferrari looks like it has good pace this weekend.

Here it is. Look quickly before Bernie's boys pull it down.

Romain crashed their twice, in FP1 & FP3, almost missed the quali as he crashed his car late in FP3. It took a tremendous effort from the Lotus engineer to shoot him in the Q1. He was unlucky not have made it to the Q3.

Although the Ferrari is saying it is due to driver's error, but many people are pointing out that there may be stuck throttle as the video showed only locking of the front, but given the circumstance, it should have been four wheel locking. Grid penalty seems irrelevant as he never made it out of the pits, but I guess if Romain or any other driver were forced to the same, the penalty would have meant he would have to start from the back.

Ferrari's #2 drivers rarely have a car problem, it is nearly always "driver error".  ;)

Just to prove the doubter like me & Lonny, Massa repeated the crash in the race as well, in this time he managed to hurt his neck as well. So you see we are so wrong about it yesterday, it is definitely "Driver's Error"  ::)

I think this may reinforce the idea that it was not driver error. Even if Felipe is not quite the driver he used to be, it's hard for me to believe he made identical errors on 2 consecutive days.

Come on Lonny, the poor chap Felipe hurt his neck, banged his car in Ste Devote just to prove to you that it is "Driver's error", have mercy on him. :D

I may be wrong but I think I heard Massa say there's
a little bump in the track that  he was hitting just as
he applied his brakes causing them to lock up.Anyone else
here it on the broadcast?

I wondered if there isn't a funky slope in that part of the road that lifts one of his front wheels or lightens it enough to easily lock up and lose it.

But still, that's what a driver needs to learn - change your line, your braking point, or whatever.  Most importantly, learn a bit of winter driving skills - lock, lift, turn.  Works almost every time.
