Penalty Points & Other Rule Changes
« on: June 29, 2013, 04:18:21 PM »
Penalty points are among the rule changes for next season.  The idea looks reasonably good on paper, but I have some doubts about implementation.  I'm more concerned with yet more long life gearboxes and engines though.  This really doesn't fill me with much confidence for the future.

What about all of you?  What are your thoughts on the new rules?

I hate rules. The less the better..... just have Charlie decide if he doesn't like something he can send a nasty note to the team.
Oh, wait..... maybe that's what they do now...

I like the in season testing.  Finally, a good idea from someone not on this forum (though I think we discussed the idea of testing right after races at least a year ago, if not two)  :fool:

Points rule I'm on the fence.  Who will hand out the points, and how many points for what sort of thing?  Can we just start the season by giving Vettel 10 points already?  8) 8)

Gearbox rule is stupid.  Still need at least 4 per car (unless Bernie is really looking at an 18 race calendar next year).  Where is there a savings?  Yank the stupid gearbox rule completely.  Lets see some gearboxes blow up.  Make the casings out of tinfoil and lets see some SMOKE!

Reduction in wind tunnel and CFD's - Get out of my face is what I'd tell the FIA if they came snooping around my F1 factory.  Sorry, but any chance the FIA can tell the teams to not do whatever the heck they want to at the factory, is way too invasive for my taste.  Let them inspect the car like crazy.  Although I don't like it, let them seal the engine to make sure it is not changed.  But if I spent $20m on a wind tunnel, I'll darn well use it whenever I please - same goes for a supercomputer to run my CFD.

Extra set of tires to get the cars out of the garage during the first 30min of FP1 - again,  :fool: :fool: :fool:  Are some TV guys whining?  Really, how many people besides the hard core fans even watch FP1?  I don't mind having a quiet track to start with, watching the mechanics work on things, get the latest rumours from the commentators, hearing about the latest tech upgrades from the tech specialist.  Then that first car goes out and you hear the engine wind up...well, I don't mind one bit.  If you want to waste another set of tires, let the teams use them whenever they want.

There, you asked for it, there's my two cents.   :D :D |-( |-( |-(

I agree, the gearbox rule is stupid. If you must limit engine development, fine, but get out of the gearbox stuff. The wind tunnel and CFD rules are supposed to help the smaller teams by limiting what the big teams can do. I doubt that the limits even affect Caterham or Marussia. I like as few rules as possible, but after Mc Laren diminated the wide open Can-Am for years, Porsche came with the 917-10 and caused one observer to note "Cubic dollars beats cubic inches every time." With no rules, the biggest budgets have even more of an advantage.  :DntKnw:

I completely agree about the gearbox rule.  I don't like it as it stands, but the new regulation is just making a mockery of the system.  At this rate, they may as well standardise it, because that's more or less what the regulations are forcing the teams to do.  This isn't F1 in my opinion.

Having just seen a gearbox issue on Vettel's car at Silverstone reminds us just how fragile these units still are. I think we may have a few more failures next year as the new engines, and especially the hybrid systems, will massively increase the loadings on the transmissions and therefore gearboxes.

Because the energy recovery systems will harvest and release over 4 times more than this year there are bound to be issues of sudden extra strain on the gearboxes if the anything gets fractionally out of synch. Surely a bit less reliability is something to welcome?

There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that the lube in Vettel's gearbox had been replaced with Vegemite.

Of Course!!  :fool: Since R/B never has problems, it must have been the lube. DUH!!

That's not the point John.  The rule change moves gearbox changes from 5 races to 6, which means absolutely no savings to teams unless Bernie goes to an 18 race calendar (oops, sorry, I mean of course the FIA  ;) ).  We all welcome a bit of unreliability, but when they just increase the number of races a gearbox must last, they will only make them more robust, not less.

This is precisely the problem.

I hope that John is right about the increase in unreliability caused by the rule changes, but I doubt that it will come to pass, as gearbox, and engine life is still being governed by this endurance style rule making which is robbing Formula 1 of a significant aspect of its spectacle.
