Author Topic: The best qualifiers of the season, and their average gap from their teammate  (Read 1051 times)

Offline batman01

Managed to find these stats:

Daniel Ricciardo, -1.106s, beat team mate 15 times. (JEV)
Nico Hulkenberg, -0.785s, beat team mate 18 times. (GUT)
Jules Bianchi, -0.585s, beat team mate 16 times. (CHILTON)
Sebastian Vettel, -0.478s, beat team mate 17 times. (WEBBER)
Adrian Sutil, -0.372s, beat team mate 8 times. (DI RESTA)
Valtteri Bottas, -0.335s, beat team mate 12 times. (MALDONADO)
Kimi Raikkonen, -0.299s, beat team mate 10 times. (GROSJEAN)
Jenson Button, -0.255s, beat team mate 9 times. (PEREZ)
Fernando Alonso, -0.204s, beat team mate 10 times. (MASSA)
Lewis Hamilton, -0.199, beat team mate 11 times. (ROSBERG)
Giedo van der Garde, -0.186s, beat team mate 8 times. (PIC)

The gap is the average time between them and their teammate in qualifying. Seeing this, Ricciardo is well worthy of that place at Red Bull.

That's an interesting stat.  Depending on how you rate Grossjean vs Massa (I give Grossjean more speed), it shows that perhaps Kimi might have a bit more than Alonso would give him credit for next year.

All well and good but you can reverse some of those stats, i.e. anyone that beat their teammate less than 10 times was out qualified on more occasions by their teammate. There are 19 races to this season.

The other thing to bear in mind is which drivers are rookies in the team this season, e.g. JEV, Esteban, Giedo. If their more experienced teammate doesn't trounce them, at least for the first half, we should expect a new boy sitting in the old guards seat next year.

Yes, but I presume that the stat was based on the time difference in Qualifying, they just wrote in the number of times out qualified for extra interest.  That means that even though Perez may have qualified ahead of Jenson more times, the average difference was in Jenson's favour, showing that when Perez beat Jenson, perhaps it was only by a small fraction, but when Jenson beat Perez, it was by quite a bit.

Fair point Scott, however the gaps between all cars at some circuits are greater than at others so the number of starts in front also has a bearing, I think?  :DntKnw:

No no, I don't take much from these stats, but did find those two notes interesting (I knew Perez had beat Button in number of times ahead in Q, but hadn't realized that Button claimed the time difference).

Of course there are way too many variables to look at these for anything but entertainment.

An interesting statistic. I guess I'm just the kind of anorak that loves such things. Thanks, Batman.

Here's the race version of those stats (ignore the Heikki vs Grossjean - kind of stupid to be in there)...

Finished ahead (when both finished)
Difference of average finish position

Vettel - Webber           15-0    2.889
Rosberg - Hamilton       8-7    -0.021 (Hamilton averaged better)
Alonso - Massa            15-1    3.120
Raikkonen - Grosjean     7-4    1.410
Grosjean - Kovaleinen    1-0    12.000
Button - Perez              12-5    0.568
diResta - Sutil                8-3    1.874
Hulkenberg - Gutierrez  12-2    3.313
Ricciardo - Vergne          6-3    0.945
Maldonado - Bottas         9-5    0.081
Bianchi - Chilton            14-2    1.095
Pic - van der Garde         8-4    0.333

Almost criminal that Sutil gets a seat and DiResta might be off to Indycar  :fool: :fool:  The results between Q and Races of Button and Perez could have something to do with why Perez is looking for a ride next year.

Do the qualifying stats take account of when team mates were not taking part in the same part of qualifying?  There would be significant time gaps at most races this year between those team mates who were competing in different sessions, owing to one having been knocked out say in Q1.
