  • Wizzo: GPW will be down from approximately 13:30 tomorrow until the migration to the new server is complete. Once the site is "live" on the new server it could take another 24-48 hours to become accessible to all users.

Tiberius, Caligula and Bernie
« on: March 27, 2014, 12:52:34 PM »
In his novel I, Claudius, Robert Graves has the evil Roman emperor Tiberius talking about why he appointed the psychotic Caligula as his successor. He reasoned that Caligula would be so horrible that everyone would remember the reign of Tiberius as "the good old days."

I wonder if that's what Bernie is playing at. There is talk that this may be his last year at the helm of F1. He has set up long term contracts with horrible venues. The cars are ugly. The power trains are pathetic. The rules are asinine. They've even stripped all of the information out of timing & Scoring. Maybe he's setting it up so that his reign will be the zenith of F1 history, that it will be all downhill from here!

I was thinking more along the lines of an intentional sabotage, so he can swoop in and 'save' the sport from his successor, and cement his legacy as the man who saved F1.

Both good points - however I can't imagine anyone believing for a minute that Bernie was or ever could be the 'Saviour of F1'... I think that there are quite a few out there who think that he's had his day and that maybe just a bit of alzheimers is beginning to set in. I mean, 'Double Points' for the last race of the year? C'mon... And what about the 'Medal' proposals from a couple seasons back? Ridiculous...  :tease:
The lead car is unique, except for the one behind it which is identical.

I think that Bernie is comendable for making his mistakes in public.  He knows not every idea is a winner, but doesn't sit around in committees doing research until every word he utters is pure genius.  He says what he thinks, and lets everyone else sort it out.  He didn't get where he is by being right all the time; only be by being right when it counts most.

As for no one expecting him to be F1's saviour, that's kind of the point.  If everyone knew what he was doing, he couldn't do it.  I've been following F1 long enough to know that betting against Mr. Eccelstone will get you points in the short run, but not much to show for the long run.
