That's really interesting.  A simple (simple to look at, yet certainly complex engineering) solution for so many different problems. 

I'm completely speculating of course, but that sort of simple yet complex engineering sure smells of Brawn's signature.  Could he have figured out a brilliant solution for this year's engine before he left?

Sound engineering. Merc probably also got an advantage on its engine customers, too. The customer teams wouldn't have know the exact specs until well into the design of their cars. For example, they probably mounted their gearboxes in a more standard position. Not an easy thing to change late in the process.

That video, from Merc, showed the compressor section of the turbo in the conventional position. It's still at the rear with the turbine section. Maybe Merc was still trying to keep it a secret at the time this vid was made.
