Sounds like just some friendly little betting, but how did the media get a sniff of it?  For all we know, the rule might be that you can't bet on your own team, and for 400Euros or whatever, it's not really as if he would want to throw a wrench around the garage to slow down his own team.

Pete Rose was a chronic gambler and the amounts involved were many, many times what Marko is said to have put down.

That said, the correct answer for a Team Principal when asked if he/she would like to bet on the outcome of an F1 race, should be a resounding 'NO'.  Under any circumstances.

I've often thought that pro athletes should be forced to bet on their own teams. It would serve as a great incentive.  ;)

Seriously, this reminds me of when the governors of the states where the two teams in the World Series, Super Bowl, BCS, whatever make a symbolic bet with each other on the outcome.

As for Pete, did you hear about the Pete Rose baseball card? Instead of having stats printed on the back, it had odds.

The rule is in Article 16.1 of the International Sporting Code, and reads:

Quote
No person holding a Licence, a Super Licence or a Certificate
of registration for the staff of Competitors entered in the FIA
World Championships... ...may, either
directly or through an intermediary, place bets or gamble on
a passage of play or a Competition, if they are involved in that
Competition.

If a Red Bull mechanic, caterer or PR person had placed the bet, that would have been fine (except, perhaps, with their boss). However, drivers, race engineers, team bosses, boss representives, deputies and financial directors are forbidden from placing any bets on the race at all.

It will be interesting to see if the regulation is enforced. I don't think the FIA could ban someone for life (above 5 years is seen as "restraint of trade" by the EU unless it's for a drug offence or for something involving a criminal conviction). However, I could well imagine a reprimand and token fine being imposed. Possibly even a temporary ban if the FIA was riled enough.

The difference being that the 'friendly' bets are for their 'own' team.

Marko betting on his team to lose isn't a good look for the sport.

Needs an FIA one race ban, probably enforced around the time of the Austrian GP.  :D

Must be looked into, can't have F1 team bosses having friendly bet on other teams or drivers to win  - whatever next drivers having contracts torn up.  :P
