Ant-man is one of Marvel's earliest super heroes.  He predates Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men.  Only The Fantastic Four predate him, plus some characters created by the company before it became Marvel (such as Captain America)

However, once it became clear that a guy the size of an ant wasn't very exciting, he became Giant-Man (get it, gi ANT -man?)  Of course, a guy who can grow to be 12 feet tall isn't all that exciting either, and he never became a popular hero.

He did have a 'career' as a character in the Avengers though.  As a non-main character, they chose to give him unlikeably qualities.  He abused his wife, 'The Wasp', for example.  Basically he was a total ass, but a brilliant scientist who was called in when something sciency, or something very small, or something very tall, had to be done.

So yes, he would convince a swarm of ants to crawl over a villain.  Comics though, so no killing.
