Been watching this film. Reminds me why I love F1. But makes modern F1 seem a bit blah.

To us old uns F1 does seem a bit blah now doesn't it.

I reckon they have strived to eliminate every single danger, which in some ways is a good thing, however they have lost that gladiatorial element because of it.

For all the talk of TV audiences not wanting to see horrific shunts I still believe too many motorsport spectators hope for crashes. Look how they flock to the site of a incident at tracks when a multi car pile up occurs, there is some magnetic draw to car wreck damage - hence extra shunts from rubber necking on the highway.

I think there is a huge difference between wanting to see a crash & wanting to see someone die.

In 1963 & 1964, there was a rash of fatal crashes in the NASCAR Grand National Series (now the NASCAR Cup). Several major stars, like Fireball Roberts & Joe Weatherly, were killed. The series immediately instituted safety improvements. They mandated basic measures like fire suits, seat belts/harnesses, fuel cells and proper rollover structures long before F1. Now, races like Daytona & Talladega are famous for having a massive shunt, known as "The Big One," at least once in every running. Every driver walks away from them.

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be many injuries even in NASCAR and there are several crashes in every race.  I don't think there is a racing series on earth that can brag that they have a better safety record than NASCAR.

When Kyle Busch hit the wall and broke his leg this the President of the Daytona Speedway actually apologized for not having "Safer Barriers" installed at that spot. They will have them in place before the July race.
