Last Dambuster Pilot Dies.
« on: August 04, 2015, 03:22:35 PM »
Les Monro, the last surviving pilot from WW2's famous "Dambusters" raid, has passed at the age of 96.

The RAF raid was carried out by the Lancasters of Sqn 617. They attacked several German hydroelectric dams in the Ruhr. Two dams were breached and one other was damaged, using Barnes Wallis's "bouncing bombs."

The raid was also the subject of a fine 1955 film. That film also served as the inspiration for the attack on the Death Star in the original Star Wars movie.

Mr. Monro was the pilot of Lancaster W for William. He died of heart problems in Aukland, New Zealand. The attached photo is Mr. Monro in the cockpit of his Lancaster.

RIP, Flight Lt.. Monro. Well done, sir.

Apparently he was still flying up until he was 95. Not many old heroes left now.
