RBR have 4 different 2016 F1 car designs ready
« on: November 03, 2015, 11:20:36 AM »
Forced to design 4 ensuring last-minute engine decision options.  :swoon:

Well that's according to team principal Christian Horner's comments in a Q & A session on the official F1 website - formula1.com. See actual comments below:-

Q: Do you have different car concepts on the drawing board, ready to choose one once the engine is decided?

CH: We have designed four versions of the car - so one engine should fit. So we wait until the music stops and see which chair we are sitting in - or even if we have a chair at all! (laughs)

Q: So when will there be a resolution?

CH: I hope within a month. But remember back with the Ross Brawn team in 2009. They got a decision in January - and won the world championship that year. That demonstrates that things can be done at short notice - if you are clever!

Clever enough to end up with a Mercedes engine instead of a Honda. Good luck with that, Christian.

When Bernie proposed the 'world engine' design, the one aspect I hoped they'd keep was standard engine mounts, so that one could drop any F1 spec 'power unit' into any F1 spec car.

It is a little unfair when some teams can design the car/engine to work in synergy, and some teams have to wait to see how the engine will attach.

wait, wait, a tear is forming...seriously, I have no sympathy.  If they had to design 4 different cars, it is nobody's fault but their own for trashing Renault before they had plan B on paper.  I hope they don't even have those designs right - somehow I doubt Ferrari/Honda/Merc are going to be too forthcoming with external dimensions and fittings of their super secret engines.

No sympathy for Horner, but look at Manor running last year's engine because somehow during an engine freeze the new Ferrari engine won't fit where the old one was.  Or look back to RBR running rev limited Cosworth V10s because Minardi couldn't afford to redesign the car to fit the V8 engines.

I don't like the idea of engine freezes, but I think the sport would be well served if everyone agreed on how an engine fits in a car.

They'll have to come up with something other than shrink wrapped bodies.

Dietrich Mateschitz has given his team until the weekend before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to find an engine supplier to keep it on the grid in 2016.

The Judge is reporting that RBR will be running an Illien influenced Renault next year.  Sounds interesting.  They will still need to eat some humble pie in my opinion...

Realistically Merc won't sell them engines, Ferrari won't sell them current engines, which leaves Renault and Honda. After what Macca has gone through with Honda, why would R/B want Hondas? Renault is their only real option aren't they?

Yes, but there was another article I saw somewhere where Mateschitz said that they would leave F1 before running Renaults again...this option may give him a way out of that retarded statement.

We can treat what Mateschitz says with as much respect as we use for politicians. The real issue is not so much they change their minds immediately after they've said something - it's the surprise they feign when someone suggests they were, and still are, talking bo**ocks.  :D

Grandprix24/7 website is suggesting Red bull will indeed be using Renault engines next year, but not as we know them now, read their suggestions for yourselves:-

In recent days, the financially-struggling team Lotus’ buyout by Renault looked set to collapse, while Red Bull is on the verge of being pushed out of F1 amid four engine suppliers unwilling to work with the energy drink stable.

But the latest tale from the paddock is that Red Bull looks set to keep racing next year by using an unbranded Renault engine run independently of the French carmaker.

It appears Red Bull and Renault, who are officially splitting, have now agreed a separate deal whereby the team can complete its unbranded ‘power unit’ next year with its own energy recovery expertise, with the possible support of Mario Illien and the Austrian engine specialists AVL.

The possibility has been strengthened by news that Red Bull will finally run the latest specification of Renault’s 2015 power unit – which could form the basis of the unbranded engine for 2016 – next weekend in Brazil.

Yeah sorry Scott I didn't read the TJ13 link before posting.

Does throw up another inconsistency in Mateschitz' pontifications, he's always stated they will not be an engine manufacturer.   That's exactly what is going to happen surely?
