Engine "Tokens" Go away in 2017
« on: February 03, 2016, 09:45:47 PM »
It's about time!

F1 will do away with its token system for engine power unit development starting with the 2017 season. Unlimited development within the season will return. That means that the entire season won't be shot if a builder starts off on the wrong foot.

Or, if it does wreck the season, they won't be able to blame the rules.  ;)

Should have brought it in from this season, but next year is better than nothing.

Be interesting to see who is willing to partner up with RBR for 17 on.

Merc and Ferrari will have a full roster of 4 so that leaves Renault & Honda, can't see either the new Renault sport F1 or McLaren being happy to give RBR their factory units in first open development season.

This is good news

It will be far more interesting seeing teams manage their engine allotment with the development cycle.  (I presume there are rules about applying upgrades to 'used' power units?)

It does favour the factory teams who will have a better idea of what's coming down the pipeline than customer teams, but it's still better than the mess we have now.

Finally, a good decision.  Like John, I kinda wish it was for this coming season as well, but I suppose Merc would throw it's toys out of the crib if they did.

According to the report on GrandPrixTimes.com:-

"Engines will still be limited to four per driver in 2017, therefore upgrades can only be introduced when a driver takes on a new unit or component."

So looks like no upgrades allowed to used elements of the PUs Jeri.

They don't even know what engines will be in the cars for 2017, would be silly to try having tokens in that situation...
